EDG’s hotel experience has ranged from small commissions such as renovations to accommodate additional poker machines or the addition of a smoking deck to major refurbishments and greenfield hotel developments.
EDG offers services that address the numerous authority and supplier requirements that effect the operation of a hotel such as accommodating the requirements of:
In addition to the opportunities presented by the visual environment, hotels are very practical and services orientated facilities. This presents the need for a design that utilises numerous electrical engineering systems such as
In undertaking the design of hotel systems,EDG addresses the ongoing operating and maintenance costs of a hotel in addition to the immediate operation of hotel systems

EDG appreciates that undertaking design of a club is unique to other industries and the clubs relationship to the community and the committee are vital considerations.
Clubs often present an opportunity to implement the latest in lighting and audio visual technology. The result of this technology can be spectacular, however EDG is careful to ensure the operation of such systems is simple and user friendly.
The process of developing an electrical services brief by EDG will typically involve the club management in:
Given the long lasting and evolving nature of clubs, the majority of EDG’s clubs experience has been expansions and renovations. In most cases, the club has needed to remain operational during the works. With the numerous electrical operating systems in a modern club, EDG has to work closely with the club management and architect to develop an appropriate design and construction program / sequence.

Modern commercial buildings are required to provide form as well as function, and have multiple design requirements according to the use of the space. Effective design must address each separate area individually, whilst providing a holistic design theme overall.
EDG understands that different areas of commercial buildings have different requirements. It can address the more decorative spaces such as lobbies and reception areas, administrative areas such as offices and workstations, as well as more functional spaces like warehouses, loading docks and car parks.
One of the most important requirements for modern commercial buildings is environmentally responsibility. There are numerous guidelines including Australian Builders Green Rating (ABGR), the Green Star Rating and the Property Council of Australia all addressing standards regarding environmental responsibility in design, construction and use of commercial space. EDG is up to speed on all these standards and requirements and can advise clients appropriately.
EDG also understands the leasing market and the significance of the commercial objectives. It employs different design strategies for base / shell buildings than it would if it was providing full commercial fitout in order for the space to be as attractive in the market as possible. The importance of having the latest in communications and security services is a key element to this process.

EDG has worked on the full range of retail environments, from fast food facilities to 5 star restaurants; from clothing shops to large barn style outlets; from boutique bottle shops to liquor barns; right through to multiple chain stores and shopping centres.
As with the hospitality sector, the visual environment is extremely important to the design, as are security and up to date audio visual technology. EDG tailors design solutions to be appropriate for the customer demographic, as the age for example of target customers will influence decisions on lighting, use of sound systems etc.
Systems also need to be designed with the staff / operator in mind considering their position, experience, and training. EDG has undertaken numerous retail facilities with the bulk of staff being casually-employed teenagers, so it is important that POS systems be automated and simplified as much as possible to allow for consistency and ease of operation and training.
EDG is also very aware of the different needs of clients, whether they are end users or shopping centre developers. Design decisions can influence the attractiveness and marketability of a space to tenants, as they can also attract customers for tenants

EDG has completed projects from preschools and preparatory, to specialised university research facilities, including numerous greenfield P12 schools for Catholic Education, Anglican Church and Education Queensland. In addition to addressing the functional requirements of educational facilities, EDG provides design solutions that address long term environmental and operational costs.
Educational facilities provide our local communities with a unique heritage. Their value is not only in educating new generations but in adding to local history and culture, leading by example and instilling pride and fond memories in students, parents and staff. EDG has undertaken works on numerous educational facilities that inspire this kind of pride.
In terms of some of the technical requirements of educational facilities today, many revolve around technology. Data usage and transfer rates within senior schools can nowadays regularly exceed four times that of a typical professional business. Growing needs to train students in current technology continually increases the demand on the data infrastructure. EDG has assisted numerous schools and educational facilities in future proofing their data infrastructure to accommodate upgrades without exposing undue costs or creating redundant capital.
As more educational facilities provide air conditioning for staff and students, EDG has undertaken numerous power supply upgrades. It is no longer acceptable financially or environmentally for staff and students to leave the electrical installation operating when not in use. EDG has designed systems to automatically control lighting and air conditioning so it is not operating unduly when spaces are not used. Such systems are tailored to each installation and have ranged from simple push button run on timers to centralised pre-programmed control systems that generate the lesson bells and activate the lighting, air-conditioning and power in rooms that are about to be utilised.
EDG has worked closely with several educational facilities to develop cost effective emergency and evacuation systems often beyond the requirements of the Building Code of Australia. Such emergency and evacuation systems address the unique nature of staff and student movement as well as risks such as fire, intruder lockdown and armed attack.

The accommodation and residential projects undertaken by the Electrical Design Group range from resorts and hotels to apartment blocks and retirement complexes.
Design of residential buildings is very market trend oriented, so EDG spends time keeping up to date with the latest in technology, the latest styles in the marketplace and determining the emerging trends for the future.
There are many issues at play when designing residential accommodation. Developers are looking for something up to date and future proofed technologically, with enough power reticulation and distribution infrastructure to accommodate increases in usage as technology improves over time. They will also require the communications, security and safety systems to be state of the art, future proofed and flexible. EDG can provide solutions that achieve these objectives, whilst also meeting budgets or in fact offering options that can exceed client‘s expectations.
Prospective tenants are equally concerned with the look and feel of their new home as they are with issues such as security and safety. EDG will tailor design solutions according to whether the properties are to be for short term stay, owner occupier or for investment. The specific needs of body corporates, in terms of long term maintenance and capital return, are also considerations in the delivery of appropriate design solutions.

EDG has completed numerous industrial projects which range from warehouse developments to process control facilities and motor control systems.
Industrial designs must be functional, robust, be fit for the purpose of the operation and address possible hazards. One of the most important areas of design for industrial space is reliable power supply, which is crucial for productivity and maximising production capacity, because of the substantial costs involved in operational downtime. It is also critical in terms of risk management and the personal safety of staff, and EDG is proactive in offering design solutions that minimise risk factors, such as power cut off switches.
EDG is also integrating into its design the ever increasing need for electronic communications for industrial facilities, often across large sites, and are always utilising the latest technology, sufficiently future proofed to allow for use over a considerable period of time without the need for costly upgrades.

Community projects are extremely diverse and can range from sporting facilities to libraries, churches and community spaces.
EDG first identifies the key requirements of user groups when beginning the design of a community facility. This often involves liaison with a project steering committee, taking the time to understand the overall aims and objectives of the space and any particular environmental or cultural issues. A library, for example, will require a power supply that can accommodate increasing use of computer technology over time, while for a sporting facility, appropriate lighting for the playing fields, as well as the indoor bar and eating areas, will be of more significance.
The demographic of the end users will also influence design decisions. A library may be primarily utilised by children and senior citizens, so effective lighting, including exterior access lighting, and safe power outlets, will be key design features.
Community projects are also invariably cost sensitive, so EDG provides design solutions that maximise service provision within budget constraints. This extends not only to initial design and installation but also to future maintenance and running costs. Use of energy efficient lighting and timed cut off power switches for example, can reduce operating costs significantly over time.
